Grey Squirrel eating nuts sitting on grass

Grey squirrels are an alien species and were introduced to the UK from the USA in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century. Their success has been to the detriment of our native red squirrels. Grey squirrels feed on acorns, tree shoots, flowers, nuts, fruits, roots and cereals. They bury surplus food 2-5cm below the soil or in tree hollows. They feed at ground level, more so than red squirrels, and together with their ability to digest acorns, (which reds can't), they have tended to displace red squirrels in areas of woodland where the two have come into contact.

Jay

Although they are the most colourful members of the crow family, jays are actually quite difficult to see. They are shy woodland birds, rarely moving far from cover. The screaming call usually lets you know a jay is about and it is usually given when a bird is on the move, so watch for a bird flying between the trees with its distinctive flash of white on the rump. Jays are famous for their acorn feeding habits and in the autumn you may see them burying acorns for retrieving later in the winter.

Great Tit Woodland Bird

Bigger than blue tits, great tits are green and yellow with a striking glossy black head, white cheeks and a distinctive two-syllable song. The black breast stripe is wider on males. Great tits feed on seeds and scraps either left on the ground, or on bird tables and in nut feeders. It can be quite aggressive at a birdtable, fighting off smaller tits. In winter, family flocks of great tits are joined by blue tits, long-tailed tits and other woodland species as they search for food.

Its colourful mix of blue, yellow, white and green make the agile blue tit one of the most attractive garden birds. They can be found flitting onto bird feeders, or feeding on seeds and scraps left on bird tables and on the ground. And almost any garden with a peanut feeder will attract them. In winter, family flocks of blue tits are joined by great tits, long-tailed tits and other woodland species, as they search for food.
